       When the solenoid valve coil is energized, the fixed iron core attracts the movable iron core to turn left via electromagnetic force. The movable iron core pushes the pushrod downward, switching the valve spool position.

When your Kobelco excavator triggers D-series or E-series alarm codes, codes starting with D typically indicate related solenoid valve faults, while codes starting with E indicate proportional solenoid valve faults. Locate the components using the guidelines below (taking the Kobelco SK-8 series as an example):

  • Cross-Testing: Locate the suspect solenoid valve and swap its plug with an identical type of valve. If the original alarm disappears and a new one appears, the solenoid valve itself is faulty.

  • Wiring Inspection: Besides valve failure, harness issues are common. Check for adapter connectors between the wiring harness and the controller (computer board).

  • Spool Sticking Test: Insert a screwdriver or thin wire into the lower part of the proportional solenoid valve to push the spool upward. If it returns properly, the valve is sound; if it fails to return, the spool is stuck and requires cleaning.

How to Disassemble and Clean Solenoid / Proportional Valves

Disassembly Steps:

  1. Under cold engine conditions, press the hydraulic oil tank exhaust valve to release pressure.

  2. Use a 4mm Allen wrench to loosen the two socket head cap screws at the bottom of the solenoid valve. Loosen both sides evenly and simultaneously—do not fully loosen one side before the other.

Note: Hydraulic oil will drip during screw loosening; prepare a small container to catch it.

Cleaning Steps:

  1. Use a needle hook to pull out the internal spool, then clean it with degreaser/solvent cleaner. Wipe away sludge with clean paper towels. The clearance between the spool and sleeve must be thoroughly cleaned.

  2. Use a wrench to secure the bottom bolt, then use another wrench to remove the adjustment screw and clean the spring inside.
