Kobelco Excavator Hard to Start or Sudden Shutdown: SCV Valve Troubleshooting Guide
When a Kobelco excavator experiences hard starting, unstable engine idling (fluctuating high and low engine sounds), or sudden unexplainable shutdowns, do not rush to call a repair shop immediately[cite: 27]. You should first check the SCV Valve (Suction Control Valve).
Understanding the SCV Valve & Common Error Codes
The SCV valve controls the fuel pump flow and is installed on top of the fuel pump. A faulty SCV valve often triggers error codes such as P0628, P0088, or P2635.
Method 1: Measure SCV Valve Resistance
Check for damage by measuring the resistance across the two plug pins. Normal resistance is around 8 ohms. If the value is extremely high or reads zero (0), the valve is defective.
Method 2: Check Common Rail Pressure on Monitor
You can also inspect the common rail pressure data directly from the monitor. Navigate to page 28, 4th item from the bottom. Normal pressure is around 51 MPa. If it erratically jumps (e.g., between 30s, 50s, and 60s), the SCV valve is faulty.
